Welcome to Fledging Crow!
We would like to extend a very special thank you to all our members and supporters. The 2010 season was a huge success. So thank you to everyone who signed up for the CSA, turned out for the markets, and served our produce in their restaurants. We couldn’t do what we love without you, and we get to do it again!
The 2011 season is here, and the greenhouses are overflowing with this year’s first transplants! The first of them are going in the ground this week and the first direct sowings are happening as well. We’re unfortunately way behind last year’s early spring, and it feels as though the warm sun and rain the plants need have been dragging their feet to oust out the last of winter. Nevertheless, summer is coming and we’re ready.
There have been a number of improvements around the farm since last year that we are really excited about for 2011. We erected a new greenhouse in the fall that will be housing the majority of this year’s tomatoes. Despite a nasty wind that shredded several holes in the skin, it wintered well and we are getting it ready for May tomato transplants. It will hopefully be the advantage we need in the chase of earlier tomatoes.
We’ve also expanded the barn to make way for a bigger and more efficient wash area. The addition of another wing has opened it up in there for more tubs, more hoses, and more produce! We are counting down the days until we can start filling those claw-foot tubs with greens.
The other big change for this season is the addition of another tractor! Thanks to Adam from Juniper Hill Produce for rebuilding that little beauty. It is a small cultivating tractor that is going to put a serious dent in our weed pressure, and hopefully remove the crick in our necks from stirrup hoeing by hand. There are a few photos of her maiden voyage here at Fledging Crow!
Another special thank goes out to the 2011 members! Our membership has exploded to over 80 members this year -- way more than we had expected. We hope that everyone has a great spring, and we’re looking forward to getting to know you and growing your food!
